"Amazingly, this is the first graphic novel for both writer and artist. Given the level of skill and quality demonstrated here, I never would have guessed that."

Shoto Press surprised the world with its breakout hit, the graphic novella Garlands of Moonlight. Garlands won a coveted Xeric Award for independent comics and went on to earn a nomination for a Will Eisner Comic Industry Award, the top honor for comics and graphic novels, and a Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer Award nomination as well. The story begun in Garlands continues in the Malay Mysteries series, alternating stories of good and evil: a compelling look at the rich world of Malay folklore and ghost stories.

Set in the Indonesian islands in 1910, near the end of the Dutch colonial period, the books weave together the adventures of Marsiti, an old herbalist, and Hidayat, a skeptical young schoolteacher, with tales told by the characters they encounter, island legends, and the events of the early twentieth century.

The third book in the series, Island of Glass and Ashes, has just been released, with the fourth (Sita's Shadow and Other Stories) due out in the spring.

The Malay Mysteries are conceived and written by series author and creative director Jai Sen, and illustrated by Indonesian, Philippine, and American visual artists. The books are printed in specially formulated black and silver inks using high-definition imaging to simulate daguerreotype photographs from the time period of the stories, an effect that has attracted as much attention and praise as the stories themselves.

The Malay Mysteries book 1: Garlands of Moonlight
December 2002 | ISBN 0-9717564-2-2
Silent and merciless, a creature of darkness has come to prey on an isolated island village.

Babies vanish, mothers are murdered, and twisted, unnatural vines appear as signs of a demonic presence. The one witness to the forces at work, a carpenter whose wife was killed as he watched, has been driven insane by what he has seen.

The old traveling herbalist Marsiti, a resident in the village since just before the troubles began, recalls an old legend that tells of a monster created when a woman dies in childbirth: a vampiric creature that masquerades as human during the day but assumes its true, horrifying form when touched by moonlight.

As the villagers try to cope with the series of gruesome crimes, a colonial governor arrives to announce that they are now subjects of the Dutch crown. Hidayat, an impassioned young schoolteacher, condemns his elders for being superstitious and struggles in vain to incite a revolution, convinced that the real threat his people face is the encroachment of a foreign power.

Terror and suspicion build as another infant disappears. The village becomes a battleground as the new dangers of the twentieth century clash with old traditions--and the restless spirits of the island's mythical past.

The Malay Mysteries book 2: The Ghost of Silver Cliff
May 2002 | ISBN 0-9717564-0-6
The little village of Silver Cliff is a beautiful place--rich in oil palms, protected from the sea by a natural bay, and perfumed with fragrant wild jasmine.

But no visitor who wants to live through the night goes there, and the residents never leave. Old tales say that Silver Cliff is under the protection of a vengeful spirit, the ghost of a young suicide, who imprisons the villagers and kills off outsiders. Mysterious lights are seen near the cliff's edge, and a billowing shadow moves through the night. Even the Dutch colonists abandon the village after their leader is killed in his sleep.

The crew of a merchant ship comes to Silver Cliff to trade for some palm oil. Marsiti and Hidayat work desperately to solve the mystery of the haunting as a life is claimed each night, and finally discover the shocking truth behind the legend.

The Malay Mysteries book 3: Island of Glass and Ashes
December 2006 | ISBN 978-0-9717564-3-4
A volcanic island of black sand beaches harbors a terrible secret: a hidden evil guarded by the walking dead.

Suspected of witchcraft by the crew of the merchant ship, Marsiti and Hidayat are left stranded and must face a powerful sorcerer and his undead servants. Two stories of ill-fated love and a dark temple high on the slopes of a volcano hold the keys to an ancient curse--but Marsiti's magic may not be enough to defeat the forces trapped on the island.

The third book in the Malay Mysteries series, Island of Glass and Ashes follows the continuing adventures of the herbalist Marsiti and schoolteacher Hidayat in their unlikely alliance as traveling ghost hunters, and reveals more of Marsiti's mysterious past.
